The importance of an Access Control System

Businesses of all sizes should always be concerned with their security but far too many choose to “hope for the best” rather than taking steps to secure their people, equipment and premises. An access control system will allow business owners to take control of security with fit for purpose solutions provided by a professional security company.

What is an access control system?

Access control systems do just that! They control access to a building or specific rooms within that building. By installing an access control system, you will be able to monitor and restrict who has access to what buildings or rooms.

This is important because all organisations have to keep business and employee data safe and keep   outside threats at bay.  Most businesses acknowledge this basic security issue by placing locks on the door and giving keys to employees that need to access these rooms.  But providing new keys each time an employee joins the business, loses a key or changing them if another one leaves, is not the most efficient or cost effective access control solution.

Business owners should ask themselves: is lost or stolen key a real threat to the security of the business; do employees need different levels of access; do you need a record of when employees or visitors arrive or leave the business premises; or could your employees, premises, equipment and information be more securely managed?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it’s time to look at investing in an access control system.

Benefits of access control

Access control systems come in a variety of types and sizes with custom solutions for every organisation. A professionally installed and managed access control system offers a business excellent benefits including:

  • An audit trail – with an access control system, you will have a record of every opening and attempted opening of each door or area. The audit trail can be valuable in resolving employee issues, such consistent late arrival or leaving early from work.
  • Restrictions – do you have employees or contractors, like cleaning staff, who should only be at your premises at certain times and days? It makes sense to restrict their access to those times rather than giving them a key that allows access at any time or day.
  • Lost or stolen keys – when keys are lost, stolen or not returned by former employees, it is an expensive process for a business to completely replace the locks on each door. And it can be a security risk if the locks are not replaced. Access control systems allow you to easily remove access by deactivating ID badges or other security credential. This can save your business time and money as well as preventing losses.
  • Remote access control – many systems allow for control of all of the business’ locks from one main, remote system. With these systems, you can easily and quickly lock down your business in an emergency as well as add and remove ID credentials.
